Article Abstract:
Central Council of Physical Recreation general secretary, Peter Lawson and British Sports Forum chair, Eileen Gray disagree over the value of the UK Review of Sport. Lawson considers it has increased confusion in sports administration. It gives too much authority to the new British Sports Forum and fails to address financial issues. Gray considers the British Sports Forum will effectively represent non-governmental organisations. The proposal for an English Sports Council is an administrative improvement. Renewed emphasis on school sports is welcome.

Charitable status could benefit sporting organisations. Financial benefits include tax relief on investment, proceeds from fundraising and commercial ventures. Donors may also claim tax relief through covenants. Other benefits include advice from the Charity Commissioners. Organisations must satisfy the Charity Commissioners and Inland Revenue that they are providing recreational facilities for the public benefit. The UK Sports Council has published guidance on applying for charitable status.
