Article Abstract:
Relations between hotels and travel agents have improved with the creation of the Hotel Clearing Corporation, which guarantees that travel agents receive commission from selling hotel accommodation. Links between the two sides are also improving as more hotels are available for booking on global distribution systems (GDS). However, hotel companies are still aware of the need to establish close personal links with key travel agents.

Rosenbluth International of the US, a travel agency is becoming a supplier of consultancy services, and is using technology to transform the links between supplier, agency and client. Clients would be able to book flights using their own computers, and smart cards would be used to board aircraft. A version of the system is being developed to be marketed to both competitors and the general public.

Charles Newbold is in charge of the new Thomson International, launched by Thomson Travel Group. Operations have been set up in Sweden, with plans to expand to all major European countries. Mr Newbold expects there will be another operation in place by Christmas, with the Netherlands and Belgium being likely candidates.
