Article Abstract:
Flooring is an important feature of the design of a building, as staff and users appear particularly interested in this. There are about 1,293 flooring manufacturers on the list of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), but choice will be restricted by regulations on permitted finishes, finance, and the preference of users. Problems to avoid include fitting the floor at a point after which damage can occur, and financial problems brought about by a change of specification.

Integrated access systems enable monitoring and control of various functions through a single network. Increased efficiency and reduced costs result from combining access control, alarm and surveillance systems and building functions. Modular systems may be easily updated. Systems may incorporate a reporting facility or issue instructions for dealing with emergencies.
