Granting aid

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom organisation, The Foundation for Sport and the Arts has distributed grants worth 16 million pounds sterling to leisure organisations in the second round of allocations. Discretionary funding may cover a proportion or the whole cost of a project. Monitoring ensures legitimate use of funds. The Sports Council welcomes the grants but considers a formal strategy for allocation would be more efficient. Successful applications include funding for a National Hockey Stadium, the All-England Jumping Course and Truro City hall, Cornwall, England.

Building the empire

Article Abstract:

Fictional television programme, 'The Brittas Empire' portrays a series of disasters resulting from the incompetence of leisure centre manager, Gordon Brittas. The writers researched leisure operations although the character of Brittas was based on a general middle management figure. Leisure professionals are not worried by the series. They consider situations too farcical to be taken seriously. Attendance at the venue for filming, Ringwood Leisure Centre, Winchester, England may have increased because of the series.
