Article Abstract:

A 20 million pounds sterling 482 seat cinema has been built in London, UK by the British Film Institute (BFI), with special facilities to show films in large screen format. The BFI London IMAX Cinema is expected to attract up to half a million people per year drawing audiences from the London area and the South of England. Showing large film format requires a 26 meter wide screen which is 20 meters high, making it the largest screen in the UK, Audiences will also hear high quality surround sound generated by a 11,600 digital watt system.

Speakers at the Large Format Cinemas Association (LFCA) annual conference held in Los Angeles in May, spoke of a good future for large format cinema, particularly in the commercial and 3D markets. Mitch Cannold of Sony New Technologies called on distributors to meet the marketing an advertising costs linked with launching a large format film, in return for a higher royalty. A key subject was production, and the availability and performance of cameras.

Article Abstract:

Imax Corp.'s new 3D large format theatre in London heralds the beginning of a number of similar developments in the UK. The Pepsi IMAX Theatre, opened in December 1997, is the capital's first large format film attraction and the audience is able to experience a 3D image via liquid crystal display headsets. Another IMAX theater is planned for London's British Film Institute in spring 1999. Other planned venues include Bristol, Cardiff and Belfast.
