Gas works

Article Abstract:

The main approaches to improving energy efficiency for leisure industry operators should be to assess how fuel can be purchased efficiently and how it can be used efficiently. It is worth considering using gas, which is becoming cheaper and can now be obtained from a range of suppliers. Consideration should be given to combined heat and power (CHP), which is energy efficient and less harmful to the environment than traditional systems.

Power houses

Article Abstract:

A combined heat and power (CHP) system can bring considerable advantages for all types of leisure organisation. Small-scale CHP systems are ideal for leisure centres and hotels which require heat throughout the year, and offer considerable flexibility. In some cases, the waste heat from a CHP unit can be used to heat water for a swimming pool. CHP systems offer reduced energy costs, and also cut down on atmospheric emissions.

Fuel injection

Article Abstract:

The deregulation of the gas market will bring considerable benefits for leisure operators, allowing them to select their gas supplier if they use more than 2,500 therms of gas a year. There are now over 60 independent suppliers to choose from, although many businesses have still not taken advantage of this situation. A typical leisure centre could make savings of around 10%, or at least 1,700 pounds sterling a year.
