The 'Setting Leisure in Your Sites' conference, hosted recently by the South East England Regional Leisure Group, looked at the changing relationship between planners and leisure developers. Speakers highlighted the growing need for decision makers in planning and leisure to develop schemes which are both imaginative and manageable as the leisure industry receives more funds from the National Lottery. It is important that the industry does not submit schemes for National Lottery funding which have been put together without consideration for whether they are truly sustainable.

Article Abstract:
Creating a total leisure experience for visitors to the California area was the focus of industry executives who met to discuss how the past can help develop the future at the International Conference on Urban Entertainment in April 1999. Delegates were told how a fall in crime had helped increase investment in urban ares, providing ample opportunities for redevelopment by the leisure industry. Combining leisure with retail and food is the way forward for the industry which can use technology to its full advantage.

Techniquest, which has recently opened at the Cardiff Bay waterfront development, is the largest hands-on science discovery centre in the UK. The purpose-built scheme represents investment of 7 million pounds sterling, and includes a planetarium, a discovery room and a library with CD ROM. It aims to be both educational and entertaining.
