The UK restaurant sector can look forward to a positive future, but it will have to make changes in order to ensure that it attracts leisure spending. Growth areas within the sector will include the 45 to 54 year-age range and facilities for families. Entrepreneurship still has a significant role to play in the restaurant sector, as highlighted by the success of YO! Sushi, which uses automation to facilitate customer choice. It is likely that there will be more negative planning decisions on out-of-town standalone restaurants in 1999.

Article Abstract:

The UK restaurant industry continues to see strong growth, fuelled by trends including a rise in the proportion of women in full-time employment and growing media coverage of food and drink. Market-leading brands are now setting very high quality and service standards, but are also meeting customer demands for value for money. It is likely that successful restaurant concepts will become increasingly focused on specific customer groups, such as young professionals or older people.

Article Abstract:

UK pub and restaurant chains are seeking new opportunities and many are moving into Europe. A particular growth area in Europe is the family-style restaurant and more branded restaurant concepts are expected to emerge in Europe over the next few years. A few themed restaurants have opened in Europe, and the 'new generation' English pubs are becoming popular.
