Article Abstract:

Plans to take advantage of the UK government's Private Finance Initiative have been unveiled by Sefton Council in connection with the building of a new leisure complex in the town. The 25 year operating contract for the new pool and sports complex will ensure the council a guaranteed income from the pool, while raising funds through the private sector. The new pool will be the first in the country built using the funding scheme, with completion expected during 2001.

Both the leisure and health and fitness markets are showing strong growth for investors in the UK during 1999. The threatened purchase of Manchester United Football Club by satellite operator BSkyB failed to materialize when the proposal was referred to the government. The takeover block has put a stop to several other bids by television operators for the rights to screen football matches through the purchase of Premier League clubs.
