Ferryman of FIAVET aims to stay at helm

Article Abstract:

Italian travel agents' association FIAVET President Alis Maccarini believes his members must improve service quality and consolidate in order to adapt to the changing travel industry. Maccarine feels he has made FIAVET members realize the rapidly changing nature of the industry and hopes he has made them appreciate the need to keep up to date with new technologies so as to defend against competition from foreign operators. Maccarini hopes to be re-elected to office in April 1997 despite being criticised for poor management. He also owns tour operator and travel agent Anteprima of Milan, Italy.

Greek's pledges fail to convince

Article Abstract:

Representatives from the European tourist industry have met with Greek tourism minister Nikos Sifounakis in an effort to solve the problems associated with Greek tourism. The authorities have pledged to modernise airports and rais standards, but there is still concern over high hotel prices and airport taxes. Prices have increased because of the drachma's value but they have become uncompetitive and visitors are not receiving value for money. It is expected that bookings for Greece will fall 3% in 1995 from 330,000 in 1994.

Natural beauty pulls in wary Italian clients

Article Abstract:

Italian tourists are reluctant to travel to the Philippines, despite its beautiful beaches and luxurious accommodation because it is a relatively new and unknown holiday destination. The holiday makers, which frequent other areas of the Far East, are thought to be put off by turbulent weather conditions and high prices. Italian travel agents do not promote the country well, says Gastone Nardoni of the Philippine tourism ministry in Italy.
