UK leisure operators should study the high streets, where eating out is improving with better standards, a greater choice of establishments and falling prices. Burger outlets are now experiencing improved sales after the beef scare hit sales by 20%. Legoland, the new UK theme park, based in Windsor, has found that its main restaurant, where freshly prepared, high quality food is served, does not suit its customers. Disneyland Paris also had similar problems when it opened. People claim to want to eat more healthily, but this does not appear accurate in practice.

Ted Turner

Ted Turner established 24-hour news station CNN in 1991 and has since expanded his empire to include cable, television, film and sports interests. He is married to Hollywood actress Jane Fonda. His love of sport is reflected in his desire to create an integrated sports business ranging from team management to television sports broadcasting, under the name Turner Sports. He has invested in sports and entertainment developments and sees sport as a major influence on leisure in the future. Turner greatly helped the city of Atlanta, GA, to host the 1996 Olympics.

France is Europe's leading leisure market, followed by Germany and the UK, according to David Camp, director of Economic Research Associates, speaking at the third annual Henry Stewart Leisure Property in Europe conference, held in Madrid, Spain. The key to securing equity for European expansion is to develop a good track record in the home market, said Richard Johnson, director of Jones Lang LaSalle, during his presentation on financing and investment.
