Article Abstract:
Growing demand for all weather playing pitches in the United Kingdom has increased choice and encouraged research and development in synthetic surfaces. Macadam bases are more expensive than 'dynamic' or crushed stone. Polypropylene pile coverings are used for hockey and football pitches although a longer curly tufted pile is increasingly used for football. Rubber underlay provides shock absorption. Manufacturers have developed polyolefin fibres and polypropylene coatings to reduce friction burns.

Article Abstract:
Construction of synthetic sporting surfaces requires preliminary investigation of ground conditions, aspect and space requirements. Usage will determine construction method and surfacing. The two main surfacing methods use polyurethane elastomer compounds. Marking paints are also polyurethane based. British Standard 7044 and International Amateur Athletics Federation guidelines relate to construction. Independent monitoring throughout will ensure compliance with standards.
