Disputed heritage

Article Abstract:

A High Court decision to stop work on 50 heritage development projects in Ireland has highlighted a conflict between economic regional development and conservation. The Office of Public Works is exempt from public consultation and planning permission application. Projects for tourist centres in the Burren National Park, the Wicklow Mmountains and the Boyne Valley have caused controversy. European Community structural funding aims to ceate jobs. However, schemes should be reconciled with conservation needs.

Billy Payne

Article Abstract:

Billy Payne, previously a lawyer and involved in American football, is head of the Atlanta Olympic Games Committee, and one of his aims is to downplay the role of corporate sponsorship in the Games to be held at Atlanta in 1996. Any such involvement will be within the bounds of good taste. Payne also aims to take a long-term approach to usage of the facilities being developed for the Games, and to make use of the existing infrastructure available at Atlanta.
