Spending on the UK leisure market is predicted to increase by 4.2% during 1998 compared with an increase of 3.6% forecast for consumer spending during 1998. The fastest growing sector will be overseas holidays, which will grow 7.2% during 1998, followed by the home entertainment sector which is predicted to increase by 5.6% during 1998. Consumer confidence and a strong pound will encourage expenditure on leisure items such as eating out, cinema, foreign holidays and home entertainment. An aging but active population will benefit sectors such as golf, gardening and overseas holidays.

Analysis of company league tables shows that the global leisure industry could be set for a major growth period, and UK leisure companies could have a leading position in that expansion. There were 54 leisure companies in the world's top 500 firms in 1996. Japan was top of the international league table with 17 of these 54 companies, second was the US with 16, and the UK was in third position with nine. The UK strength comes from the diversification of its leisure companies, which has been a response to the volatility of the sector.

Continued economic stability in the UK is helping to fuel record growth in the consumer spending and leisure markets. Consumer spending is fueled by growth in the do it yourself sector, encouraged by television programmes focusing on the home and garden. Spending on computers and new digital technology in the home has also driven up consumer spending. Increased disposable income levels will have a positive impact on eating out and the consumption of wines.
