Article Abstract:
The dependence of US shipyards on military contracts for shipbuilding and repair has changed due to the US Navy's efforts to trim down its budget and the implementation of the shipbuilding loan guarantee program. The reduction in the number of highly skilled workers over the past few years is expected to pose a problem as shipyards try to expand their workforce to accomodate new contracts. US companies also plan to export shipbuilding production techniques such as computer aided design and manufacturing and other three-dimensional modeling systems.

Article Abstract:
German shipyards restructure and intensify their research and development to compete more effectively in the world market. After the unification in 1990, shipyard production declines from 89 ships in 1996 to 40 in 1997. This is attributed to the country's failure to bridge its pricing structure to that of Korea and Japan. Nevertheless, all efforts are now geared towards increased production, reduced costs and product quality.
