Thrusters assume new roles

Article Abstract:

The demand for thrusters has been increasing due to their maneuverability at low speeds, less noise and high level of redundancy. Thrusters, which were originally used on workboats and in the offshore industry which requires vessels with high maneuverability, could also be used as propulsor on various types of ship, particularly passenger ships. The high rating of a number of designs serve as evidence of how efficient thrusters are as propulsor.

Driving for flexibility

Article Abstract:

Centa, Geislinger and Lohmann + Stolterfoht each specified a coupling to link a Cummins KTA50M to an A Van Kaick generator. Centa provided a CM-8000-SCB1-70-18-197 unit which accommodated 0.5 mm of misalignment and 0.5 degree of angular misalignment. Geislinger specified an SE 41/5/79N/16/14 coupling with the advantage of being steel with oil filled rings. Lohmann + Stolterfoht offered Spiroflex KSP 120/1200 with two parallel ring elements.
