Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Organization is considering the installation of voyage data recorders (VDR) on cargo ships. The development of a more sophisticated VDR will include recording the vessel's location, speed and course; radar information; engine and rudder status; main alarms; bridge correspondence; VHF shipshore and ship-ship communication; and wind speed and direction. The improvements on data recorders, which meets operational standards and requirements, would be of importance when compiling information in cases of sea mishaps.

A and P Group production director David Dobson considers FPSO conversion as one of the most challenging tasks associated with marine engineering. After completing two major FPSO projects, Dobson stresses that the success of conversion programs relies significantly on planning and co-ordination among project members. FPSO conversions must also feature an efficient fatigue life analysis to determine the extent of life extension work.
