Norway's rigid tax laws, which have been impeding the growth of the country's maritime industries, are poised to undergo changes as the Storting establishes a taxation system that will increase the competitive edge of Norwegian shipping lines. Projected to be implemented in FY1996, the new system involves conditional exemption from taxation for shipowners. Tonnage will be the basis of taxation for companies, computed according to the net tonnage of the owned and operated fleet. It also clearly defines shipping companies and individual shipowners. Shipping firms hail the proposed system as a recognition of their contribution to the economy.

Geared bulk carrier firms are becoming more active in the production of deck machinery such as cranes and hoists to facilitate faster unloading times and more efficient cardo handling. Increased global competition coupled with demands of shipowners have driven marine manufacturers such as Austria's LiebherrWerk Nenzing and Japan's Tsuji Heavy Industries Co. to improve their products. The Austrian firm's deck crane designs have become more efficient with increased hoisting speeds from 12m/min to 20-22m/ min under a full load and reduced machinery weights.

Article Abstract:
Germanischer Lloyd has conducted a strength and seaway analyses for the 8,000 TEU container ship design program. Major seaway analyses were carried out on a big container ship designs through the 3D panel with non-linear corrections. Long-term statistics were employed to estimate the seaway response and produce design values. A feasibility study of the envisaged structural design was conducted for the strength analyses.
