Most advanced VLCC has high technology features

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi has announced the construction of its new 258,000 dwt VLCC Cosmo Delphinus. The ship is equipped with a contra-rotating propeller which should reduce fuel consumption. The bridge is equipped with advanced detection systems such as a real time navigation system, an anti-collision section, an engine control and maintenance section, and a cargo handling section. This 'Super Bridge' should reduce the chances of environmental disasters. The pipes in the tanks are corrosion resistant, and the hull is painted with a tin-free paint.

Developing a frontline VLCC

Article Abstract:

Hyundai Heavy Industries has started building its 311,000 dwt Front Century vessel which belongs to its 'C-class' sister ships. Several energy-saving specifications and some novel features that ensure environmental protection have been included in the design. Other features of the vessel include its unique hull form and unconventional fore part which enable the vessel to survive in rough seas.

Propeller performance gives operational advantages

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi's contra-rotating propeller is designed with two propellers which rotate in different directions and at different speeds. This asynchronous system achieves improvements over synchronous systems in efficiency, but also in maneuverability, noise, and vibration. The forward propeller has five blades which rotate slightly slower than the aft's three, allowing their speeds to coincide.
