Maintaining an even keel

Article Abstract:

Companies offering roll stabilization systems have emerged in the past few years, as roll stabilization has become a requirement for nearly all passenger vessels. However, there are a number of variations on how fin stabilizers work. Sperry's system involves sensing the lift created by the fin and uses a transducer on the shaft to measure the lift produced by the fin, comparing this with the demand signal. Sperry, as well as Fincantieri, also use flaps fitted to the fin's trailing edge, while Brown Brothers employs a fishtail design. Companies also use different control systems.

Ship's team leads way

Article Abstract:

A major re-engining operation was performed on the Louis S St. Laurent, the Canadian Coastguard's largest icebreaker. The vessel's original turbo-electric DC drives were replaced by a five-engine, diesel/AC-DC system to reduce the ship's shaft reversal response and improve its maneuvering flexibility. The re-engining project was carried out by engineers from Siemens AG and MaK.

New gas combustion process for LNG carriers

Article Abstract:

The details pertaining to the usage of the combustion chamber concept for the as a standard for boiling off of natural gas for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier propulsion, are presented. The concept has been developed by Saacke Marine Systems of Bremen and designed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique.
