Legislation alters economics

Article Abstract:

The Finnish government has taken measures to revive its car ferry industry and declining fleets which stand at 1.5 million gt. The European Union is planning to permit its member states to support the development of their maritime industries and remove personal duty-free allowances between states. The move is seen as another threat to the Finnish industry which has already suffered from foreign competition. Duty-free allowances account for about 43% of $918 million in revenues earned by Finnish industry passenger ships.
