Article Abstract:
The elastic coupling and damper designed by Niigata-Geislinger for Mitsubishi's ship the Cosmo Delphinus is the first such damper built for two-stroke diesel ship engines. Usually, vibrations are dampened by adjusting viscous dampers within a turning wheel. The high horsepower diesel engine of the Cosmo Delphinus required two radial taper leaf spring pieces, supplied with lubricants adjusted for temperature. A monitoring system allows the crew to monitor vibrations. Tests showed that the damper performed 12% better than expected.

The planetary gear unit which Renk Tacke has built for Mitsubishi's contra-rotating propeller system is arranged behind the main engine, and accepts half of the 20,600 kW the engine produces, with the rest going directly to the forward propeller. Vibrations were kept extremely low, and the temperatures of the thrust bearing pads were within accepted ranges.

GKN's TM2000M torsion meter is compared with Maihak's MDS 820 and VAF Instruments' PALCO-3 R800. Torsion meters are usually located on the engine side of an intermediate bearing, with the rearmost shaft section being left free for withdrawal.
