Japanese Ministry of Transport statistics reveal that Japan's fishing fleet stood at 1,970 ships totalling 99 million dwt in 1998. Additionally, trade volume fell from 720 million t in 1997.

Japanese yards under pressure

Article Abstract:

Output from Japanese shipyards amounted to 9.7 million gross in 1999, against 10.68 million in 1998. However, Japanese Ship Exporter Association figures show that its members took 237 orders amounting to 8.7 million gross during the year, against 144 orders of 7.2 million in 1998.
