Article Abstract:
Research by European Gas Turbines (EGT) shows that turbo charger manufacturers are having to raise engine mean effective pressure and piston speeds to meet increased demand for lower cost per kW of power. Higher ratings engine manufacturers may have to use more expensive titanium impellers. Turbo charger compressors should be designed to offer peak efficiency at relatively low pressure ratios, giving a good part load performance. The turbo charger has seen several problems with the use of HFO by diesel engine operators, such as wear damage of bearings from abrasive particles.

Winches and cranes are being redesigned to fit limited spaces on board. Space-saving and easy-installation features characterize Brissonneau & Lotz Marine's Compacwinch system and Ulstein Deck Machinery's new anchor and mooring winches. Hatlapa also plans to design automatic auto-tensioning mooring winches powered by an asynchronous motor. MacGregor-Hagglunds has created CR2000, a modular crane control system that uses the latest microprocessor technology.
