Debunking bunkers

Article Abstract:

Major oil companies produce residual fuel by mixing just the right amount of distillate to the leftover oil from the refining process to meet ISO standards. ABS's Bunker Report Quality shows that not all residual fuel deliveries are meeting ISO standards. Shipowners can add clauses to fuel purchase agreements or practice vigilance to ensure high-quality residual fuel. But shipowners must also accept that residual fuel from oil majors may be of variable quality if they want to avail of the cheapest fuel available in the market.

Bunkers and fuel emissions - an inseparable problem?

Article Abstract:

Several new regulations governing toxic emissions generated by ships are being considered by government agencies and international marine entities. These new regulations are aimed at significantly reducing air pollution from the marine industry. The primary source of pollution in the industry is bunker fuel. Some fuel analysis service providers insist that ship operators should pay close attention to the specifications of their bunker fuels to reduce emissions.

Recycled problems

Article Abstract:

The common practice of adding used lube oil in marine bunkers is facing scrutiny because of concerns that it leads to engine damage and health problems to shipping crews. Tests showed that used lube oil can be added to marine bunkers without causing problems to engine and health by following certain parameters. One test conducted by ABS Oil Testing Service detected some engine problems because the ash content was well over the ISO limit of 0.15% for 380.
