Cutting the !Gariep

De Beers Marine of Cape Town South Africa investigated the feasibility of converting the crawler-mining vessel named !Gariep into a vertical drill diamond mining ship. The conversion work was given to A&P Tyne Ltd, and work commenced on the critical path activity within a few weeks.

The cyclonic damage caused to the zinc ore carrier Wunma, owned by Australian mining company Zinifex, due to firm's neglect in following recommended safety measures is discussed. The ship has been crippled by cyclone Nelson.
