Bulk carrier cracking problems

Article Abstract:

A technical report released by Lloyd's Register (LR) has revealed that extensive fatigue cracking in ships commonly occur in web and floor stiffeners and tripping bracket connections in double bottom and hopper tank spaces. LR recommended that thorough inspections of the said areas be carried out by the ship's personnel. In addition, LR released several best practice recommendations for repairing fatigue cracks. Among the recommended solutions were the use of shaped inserts for floor stiffeners and tripping brackets and the fitting of soft toe backing brackets.

Bulk carriers - an update

Article Abstract:

Lloyds Register reports on research concerning improvement of safety levels in the design and operation of bulk carriers. Various factors which contribute to structural failures and ship losses include principal locations for crack initiation. Large scale models of some hull structures of bulk carriers have been made to investigate their performance when subjected to fatigue testing.
