Larger and more complex ship designs are easily made with the introduction of improved computer-aided design and manufacturing software that feature greater functionality and increased modules. For instance, Autoship Systems has released the 7.1 version of Autoship which features real-time hydrostatics and editable trimmed surfaces. Dassault Systems, on the other, hand, introduced its Catia CADAM Shipbuilding Solutions 2.0 which has 3D modeling functions and specialized capabilities in ship hull steelwork design.

Article Abstract:
The pending EC law that would bar the use of antifoulings containing tin on commercial ships has been criticized on the basis of its potentially detrimental impact on the future of the shipbuilding industries in EC countries. Further aggravating the situation for both marine coaters and shipbuilders in the region is the provision that vessels with tin-based antifouling may be exempted if the tin application process was done outside of the EC.

Article Abstract:
Harland and Wolff PLC is focusing on its offshore operations following heavy losses in 1995. The company is building new drydocks for ship repair and maintenance operations and is engaged in the repair of several high-capacity vessels, such as the Sea Empress and North Trader. It has also landed a $600 million contract to build a 950,000 bbls capacity FPSO for the Schiehallion oil field in an area west of Shetland.
