Automated system handles Ford windshields

Peak Industries Inc.'s automated conveyor and storage systems handle windshields for Ford Motor Co. The system, which replaces manual installation, is utilized to move the windshields from a lehr bending oven to a washer. Major elements of Peak Industries' new system include several belt and roller conveyors, storage racks, transfer carts, track-type shuttles and a glass separating station as well as a turnover device and two robots. Ford stated that the system, which accommodates six different styles of windshields, has improved the firm's product flow as compared to the old manual setup.

Control system makes product flow a sure bet

International Game Technology (IGT) has shifted from using electromechanical machines to microprocessor-based hardware for its gaming machines. In response to the transition, the company decided to merge 17 of its low-tech manufacturing facilities into a single $86 million super facility in Reno, NV. IGT's control system, which is used to bring finished gaming machines to burn-in and queuing loops, includes product induction and staging, kitting and kitted cabinet storage, and assembly and test spurs as well as burn-in and package queues.

New conveyor handles big screens

Article Abstract:

Toshiba America Consumer Products has recently installed a Webb-AlumiTrak modular power and free conveyor system at its main assembly and distribution facility near Nashville, TN. The system delivers parts from a supply area to a clean room where they are presented at an ideal loading and work height to give the assembly workers maximum ergonomic comfort. The new conveyor system can assemble 20-ft track sections in less than 10 minutes. The system can also accomplish the assembly of horizontal turns in less than 15 minutes.
