Are two hulls better than one?

Article Abstract:

Adoption of the double hull has been made mandatory for tankers for its ability to withstand grounding without resulting in cargo spillage in case of a low velocity impact. The hazards like increase in the corrosion process, risk of explosion in the void space is to be considered and there is a need to be inert for the overall safety of the tankers.

Issues are presented concerning the economic and environmental threat posed by piracy in Asian waters which is directed at tankers. The easy sale of gasoline and diesel on the blackmarket makes oil tankers particularly vulnerable.
