Ferguson Shipbuilders and the Northern Lighthouse board have combined to build a new lighthouse and buoy tender, Pharos. The ship's cost was $22.4 million. It will serve lighthouses and navigational aids in and around the UK and Northern Ireland. It is built to transfer varied kinds of loads quickly and easily, and has storage space for Class 2 and Class 1 buoys. It is also equipped with a helipad, fully automated navigational systems, and a distinguished wooden desk seat/skylight.

Stena Line AB's HSS 1500 is the largest fast ferry in the world. The ferry, dubbed the 'Stena Explorer' has excellent seakeeping abilities, which are crucial for the vessel's inaugural Holyhead/Dun Laoghaire route. The shipbuilding industry continues to suffer difficult times, with majority of shipyards around the world seeing a decline in construction contracts during 1994. South Korean and Japanese yards, which dominate the industry, are facing increasing competition from China and its much cheaper prices. However, analysts have also noted the increase in ship deliveries during 1994.
