An exploratory multinomial logit analysis of single-vehicle motorcycle accident severity

Article Abstract:

A multinomial logit formulation presents a multivariate analysis of motorcycle-rider accident severity in single-vehicle collisions. A probabilistic model, comprising variables related to environmental factors, road conditions, and rider and vehicle characteristics, is used to explore the causal processes underlying accident severity. Findings show that despite cautious riding, older riders suffer severe injuries in an accident due to physiological factors. Although use of helmets reduces injury severity in some types of collisions, it rarely benefits in fixed-object collisions.

Geographic distribution of fatal motorcycle crashes, by design type, in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties from 1983-1985

Article Abstract:

Crash reports of 441 fatal motorcycle accidents during 1983-85, plotted according to geographical occurrence and involving 1981 and later model vehicles, showed that racing and street-design motorcycles crashed in similar locations. Racing was the primary cause reported by witnesses in only 13 cases. Racing-design motorcycles outnumbered street-type motorcycles for crashes in the 1985 registration group, but no specific location revealed this disparity. The excess of racing-type motorcycle crashes is not due to their being raced on mountainous terrain and winding roads.

Prevention of violence and injuries due to violence

Article Abstract:

The incidence of homicide, sexual abuse, child abuse and neglect, and suicide in the U.S. is increasing at an alarming rate. Interpersonal violence can be prevented by coordinating and focusing efforts on the factors attributedto its commission, namely: ready access to firearms, substance abuse, exposure of children to violence through media or personal experiences, and nonrecognition of people suffering from treatable mental disorders needing professional help.
