Understanding compass error

The magnetic compass plays an important part in navigation in responding to directional changes in the earth's magnetic field. Variations are fixed in all compass readings, and deviations are computed by comparing the compass bearing of a distant object to its fixed magnetic bearing.

Directions for constructing a simple sun compass are provided that can be used to determine the degree of deviation resulting from a boat's movement across the earth. The compass is made from a block of wood, a protractor and a straight piece of wire.
