Fishers who cannot afford much in the way of tackle equipment or those who are just getting interested in fishing can purchase tackle that will serve several purposes. A graphite/fiberglass rod is a good starting point, while a spinning rod that is medium-fat, medium power is recommended.

Three fishing rods are evaluated. The $475 Sage 690-4 RPL+ casts large patterns and small flies equally as well. The $250 Redington SSF 8090 was designed for tight-cover fishing. The $515 Loomis FR1205 is a 10-foot rod that weighs only 3.15 ounces.
