Steering systems deserve regular inspections and the basic things to check include centering of the chain, cable tension, rudder stops, sheave alignment and mounting and rudderhead fitting. The emergency tiller should be fitted and tested at sea before an emergency occurs.

Article Abstract:

The choices available in onboard lighting are discussed as it is revealed many cause a major drain on the battery causing the need for frequent recharging. The use of task lighting and the good practise of switching off unused lights can help.

Through-hulls and seacocks

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the importance of good installation and regular maintenance of all the plumbing on a boat which enters the hull below the waterline. The use of plastic and metal seacocks is discussed.
