The proper tools and essential materials for repairing sails offshore are listed and described. Hand-stitching with palm and needle can be used to repair chafe, split seams and L-shaped tear. Techniques for making sails for a jury rig are described.

Sail survival in an ultraviolet world

Article Abstract:

Sails should be covered as much as possible to protect them from ultraviolet degradation. They should be removed in winter or when the boat would not be used for a month. Sails should be washed periodically to wash off accumulated salt.
