Each competitive runner has a different mental state, a so-called zone, prior to a race that helps them reach their optimal level of performance. By monitoring their prerace mental state and their corresponding performance during a race, runners can pinpoint what their ideal zone is.

Ashenfelter won the gold medal in the steeplechase during the 1952 Olympics. He set a world record with his time of 8:45.4, and his victory ended the domination of steeplechase that was maintained by Finnish and Swedish athletes.
