Article Abstract:
This article examines the effects of aging on the functional properties of skeletal muscles in men and women. Findings indicate that an age-related decline in muscle strength is associated with a deterioration of muscle mass in both genders, but may also be related to neural factors in men.

Article Abstract:
Isokinetic resistance training may strengthen muscles without adding bulk. Researchers measured adaptations in the right quadriceps femoris muscles of seven men who performed 50 isokinetic knee extensions per day for 13 days. Muscle fiber types, fiber area, and phosphofruktokinase activities, taken from the vastus lateralis, showed no difference aafter training. Peak torques and relative areas of the quadriceps femoris increased, however. Magnetic resonance imaging showed increased muscle contraction in both the superficial and deep muscle areas.
