Trophy deer exist because they are good at avoiding being hunted. Pursuing the biggest buck requires a good strategy and knowledge of deer behaviour, but can be counter-productive if the whole season is spent hunting one particular animal.

Aerial maps of a deer hunting ground can be analyzed to determine bedding areas, and other strategic information about the terrain and how deer will probably react to them. Aerial maps can be obtained from the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. Tips are given on using aerial maps.
