Hunters and other outdoorsmen ironically have helped to rescue nature from destruction, by recognition through their excesses that natural resources are limited. Prominent hunters spurred the passage of the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 after shooting devastated shorebird populations.

The Taylor Timber Rider, which opens up salvage timbering in fire-damaged, diseased or dead forests, is seen by some as a license for rampant clear cutting. Fishing and hunting spokesmen claim logging sediment in streams damage fish populations and clear cutting destroys other wildlife habitat.

A redneck goes green: when push came to shove, Lamar Marshall shoved back

Article Abstract:

Sportsman Lamar Marshall became an environmentalist when he went hunting and saw that much of the Bankhead National Forest in Alabama had been clear-cut. Animals that are hunted need forest land to survive. His stance and work for the Bankhead Monitor has had an impact on environmental policy.
