Article Abstract:
Current research disproves some of the long-held myths about the ski bindings. Age, sex, and ability are not essential, but the skiers weight is the most important factor determining the minimum retention requirements. A fixed ratio between twist release and forward lean is satisfactory for most skiers. Settings can be lower than currently recommended. Binding design improvements are needed for the heel area.

Instead of retrenching its operations and laying off personnel, Olin Ski Co. is attempting to increase its market share through aggressive sales promotion and introduction of new products. In response to dealer input, advertising outlays were increased. Two new models of skis, intermediate between performance and racing skis, were introduced.

Despite favorable weather with much snow, 1981-2 ski season was hit by recession. Consumers shied away from long-term, no-refund deposits. Resort attendance plunged except in the Northeast. Facilities were less occupied. Beginner traffic waned. Extended weekends replaced ski-week vacations. European travel drained domestic business.
