Article Abstract:
Washington, DC-based Center for Marine Conservation realized its goal of ending global marine pollution with the creation of Underwater Cleanups. Approximately 7,442 divers from the US and 27 other countries participated in the cleanups, which took place on Sep. 16, 1995.

Politicians need to know the major problems affecting the world's marine resources in order to develop effective solutions. Divers can help increase politicians' awareness by giving their stand on major issues such as overfishing, habitat destruction and pollution.

Scuba divers, companies and environmental groups are expected to join the ninth International Cleanup Day on Sep. 16, 1995. The program, which was started by the Center for Marine Conservation, calls on volunteers to clean debris on all marine environments.
