Winning isn't everything: competition, achievement orientation, and intrinsic motivation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze J.M. Harackiewicz and C. Sansone's process framework of intrinsic motivation in a competitive context. The influence of competition and achievement orientation on intrinsic motivation was examined. Results indicated that achievement orientation moderated the effects of competition. Findings also showed a number of mediators of competition and feedback effects on intrinsic motivation. These include perceived challenge, eagerness, competence valuation and positive affect.

Emotional transfer in goal systems

Article Abstract:

The phenomenon of affective transfer in goal systems was explored with five experimental studies. It was found that the factors affecting the dimensions of transfer include the magnitude of affect invested in the goal, the quality of invested affect and the strength of association between a given means and the goal-event.

Achievement goals and intrinsic motivation: coherence, concordance, and achievement orientation

Article Abstract:

Two studies were conducted to examine the effects on intrinsic motivation of pursuing lower-order target goals in an achievement context emphasizing a performance purpose goal. Both the study revealed the same results by showing a mediate goal effects on intrinsic motivation.
