Therapeutic alliance and the retention of couples in conjoint alcoholism treatment

Article Abstract:

The development of a therapeutic alliance between therapists and clients has been shown to relate significantly to certain aspects of treatment outcome. The effects of therapist behaviours on attrition of couples undergoing treatment for alcohol dependence is evaluated. It was found that more experienced therapists developed better therapeutic alliances and were more competent in delivering techniques. Also, couples who completed treatment were more likely to have therapists with higher Vanderbilt Therapeutic Alliance Scale scores and lower Vanderbilt Negative Indicators Scale.
