The reality of migration

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the immigration law in 1965, which was aimed at making family reunification the main thrust of US immigration policy, has created problems of integration in society. To cope with the increasing number of immigrant families, coming mostly from Latin America and Asia, the government has enacted the Balance Budget Act of 1997 designed to reduce the number of uninsured children. Other projects for the benefit of immigrant children are also being undertaken including the Migrant Health Program.

Article Abstract:

Immigration reform is one of the major political concerns in this 1996 election year. Democrats and Republicans, as in all other possible issues, debate on whose party is more capable of keeping immigrants out of the country. The current national debate is seen as focused on the impacts of proposed legislation on families, refugees, immigrant eligibility for benefits and the national verification system. Still, any national attempt to reform immigration laws must be based on what is transpiring in society.
