Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the effects of processing goals of readers on spontaneous dispositional trait inference generation. During the first study, subjects performed a word stem completion task having impression formation and verbatim, factual and general elaborative recall as processing goals. Results indicate that spontaneous trait inference activation appeared only when elaborative processing is involved. Subjects were also tested on implicit memory tasks to obtain measurements of on-line concept activation. Both word stem and word fragment completion tasks were affected by the type of concept activated in sentence comprehension.

The validity of the Implicit Association Test of racial attitudes is discussed, with a focus on the effects of word familiarity and frequency. Research presented concerns theories of intelligence, focusing on how people use a subject's features and their own prototype of intelligence to judge the intelligence of a subject. Findings suggest that prototype fit is important to judgements of intelligence, but the feature of 'achievement' is also key to determinations of intelligence.
