Social work education in the Baltic states and Poland: students assess their programs

Article Abstract:

A study of two student focus groups during the 1994 First Baltic-Polish Conference on Social Work Education provides feedback on the education programs. The student responses indicate the success of the collegiate model adopted in the East European countries. The students recommended increased experiments, opportunity for specialization and reduced class duration among ideas that would improve their respective programs. They identified theoretical competence, actual experience and interpersonal relations as factors that aid learning.

A cross-cultural study of social work students' attitudes toward AIDS policy: implications for social work education

Article Abstract:

The attitudes of social work students to AIDS/HIV in Egypt and the US are compared. Cultural factors influence the way social work students in these two countries respond to the issue. It is important for social workers to be aware of the factual details of AIDS to enable them to help people with AIDS. While in the US there is an effort to include AIDS awareness in the curriculum, this has not become a primary concern in Egypt.

Freire and Gandhi; their relevance for social work education

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding the relevance of the Brazilian Paulo Freire and of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi for social work education in developing countries are discussed. The core values of both and their views on the role of education in society are both included.
