Smoking attitudes, beliefs, and readiness to change among acute and long term care inpatients with psychiatric diagnoses

Article Abstract:

The barriers and motives for quitting smoking, health risk knowledge and readiness to change in a hospitalized acute and long term care population with psychiatric diagnoses, are assessed. Most of the smokers were in precontemplation or contemplation. Smokers in the mentally impaired/chemically addicted (MICA) unit were more similar to the general population in smoking relating beliefs, and were more likely to be in preparation. This suggests a requirement for interventions of an educational and motivational type.

Stress-coping and other psychosocial risk factors: A model for smoking in grade 6 students

Article Abstract:

Many adult smokers started smoking during adolescence and it is thought that life changes and stress associated with adolescence may result in the adoption of unhealthy or maladaptive behaviors. An ongoing study of adolescents is investigating the interrelationships of stress, coping, self-esteem, psychological distress, social support and smoking behavior. It has been found that stress was important for both males and females, but mechanisms underlying smoking were different.
