HIV, AIDS, and drug abuse in the international sector

Article Abstract:

About 2.1 million adults were estimated by the joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) to have the HIV virus or the AIDS disease at the end of 1995. The UNAIDS further projects that some 30 to 40 million people worldwide will be living with HIV infection by the year 2000. While heterosexual contact is the leading transmission mode, injection drug use, specifically the sharing of drug paraphernalia, has placed large, highly marginalized populations at risk of HIV infection and AIDS. In light of such greater risk of contracting the disease, many countries have instituted risk reduction initiatives as part of their AIDS prevention programs.

Advances and redirections in understanding effects of fetal drug exposure

Article Abstract:

Greater methodological rigor needs to be introduced in the design of outcome studies to assure the integrity of future findings. To better identify vulnerable populations, greater specification of covariates of exposures that influence child outcome is needed. The improvement of quantifiable and self-report measures of drug exposure severity would also be welcome. The application of statistical methods that are more sensitive to the potential effects of drug exposure would also help.
