This article is based on a study of the behavior of children who grow up in a rural setting within the UK. Issues discussed include 'hidden geography', childhood encounters with the countryside, and the ways in which children use their point of view to re-examine concepts of the rural idyll. Other topics include exclusion and disenfranchisement, and the concept of the 'Good Life' versus the reality of country life.

A comparison of matched manufacturing plants in rural and urban areas in Northern Ireland to identify key differences is presented. Studies revealed that urban plants relied on their reputation to gain a competitive advantage whereas rural firms were influenced by the availability of transport, staff and external trade factors for the same.
